Video of My Teaching

Description of Video 1: Vocabulary

In this video, I have my students work together to learn and practice new vocabulary. This reflects my belief that vocabulary is essential to language instruction and should not be overlooked. The video also shows my video editing skills, my rapport with students, and my ability to give clear instructions, work with students individually, monitor, and give feedback.

Description of Video 3: Fluency Lines

In this video, I implement an activity called fluency lines which I've learned about during my masters degree. Students are given a short amount of time to speak on a given topic, then are asked to speak again within an even shorter amount of time. This type of activity is greatly beneficial in improving students' ability to speak fluently, concisely, to organize, and to summarize. The video also shows my ability to adapt, improvise, and engage my students.

Description of Video 5: Listening Skills

In this video, I guide my students through some listening comprehension questions of my own design after they listened to an informational video about suns and took notes. Before the video, students discussed the answers to these questions in pairs. This video shows my ability to create low-stakes formative assessments that encourage my students to listen carefully for details.

Description of Video 2: Authentic Roleplay

In this video, I give my students a speaking prompt that helps prepare them for an institutional test. Moreover, this prompt helps them to develop the English language skills that they'll need in their lives, especially in an academic setting such as university which many of the students are preparing for. This reflects my belief that students should engage in authentic communications that are specific to their needs.

Description of Video 4: Debate

In this video, I ask my students to debate on how to best prevent procrastination. Once again, the topic is relevant for their needs and context. Before the video begins, students were given a short amount of time to discuss in pairs, then groups. This video shows my ability to organize unwieldy speaking tasks (debates) and turn them into engaging activities that help my students to develop their language skills in supporting and defending their opinions.

Description of Video 6: Opinion Defense

In this video, I hold a classroom level discussion on a speaking warm-up prompt that they had discussed in pairs immediately prior to the video start. My goal with this activity was to get them to hypothesize and defend their opinions even in the face of complications–skills required by the institution and ACTFL. This video shows my ability to meet course outcomes through creative activities of my own design.

Description of Video 7: Grammar Skills

This video comes from my very first semester teaching ESL. It shows that even prior to my graduate education, I was able to contextualize grammar and show the utility of grammar. The video also shows how I kindly encourage and elicit participation from all of my students with the goal that each has an opportunity to build confidence, practice, and make improvements.
